How charges work

No surprises

Included in the call-out charge: Travel within the area we cover, attendance, diagnosis and the first 60 minutes of work.
After the first hour: Time is charged in 30-minute blocks at the extra-time rate for the same band.
Which band applies: The band is set by the time the engineer arrives, and the whole visit is charged at that band.
No emergency surcharge: An emergency costs the same as any other call-out in the same band. You pay for the time of day, not the word "emergency".
Parts: Charged on top. Common parts are carried on every van, and the engineer confirms the price before fitting anything.
Extra work: Nothing beyond the first hour goes ahead without your agreement.

How we fix it

1Identifies the type of tap, whether it uses a traditional rubber washer or a quarter-turn ceramic cartridge
2Isolates the supply to the tap and takes it apart to check the washer, O-rings, cartridge and seat
3Confirms the price of the replacement part, or of a new tap if the body is worn, before fitting anything
4Fits the new part and cleans scale from the internals, checking with you before going past the first hour
5Turns the water back on and checks the tap shuts off fully and the connections underneath are dry

Before the engineer arrives

If the drip is getting worse, close the isolation valve on the pipe under the sink, or the stopcock, until the engineer arrives.
Note the make of the tap if it's marked anywhere, as some cartridges are specific to the model.

FAQs

Dripping or leaking taps: your questions

Why does my tap still drip after a new washer?

If the brass seat the washer presses against is pitted or scored, water gets past even a new washer. The seat can sometimes be reground; otherwise the tap may need replacing.

Can a mixer tap be repaired?

Usually. Most mixer taps use ceramic cartridges that can be swapped individually, as long as a matching cartridge is available for the model.

Should I tighten the tap harder to stop it?

It's better not to. Overtightening crushes the washer or cracks a ceramic cartridge, which makes the drip worse and the repair harder.

Is there an emergency surcharge?

No. An emergency costs the same as any other call-out in the same time band. You pay for the time of day, not the word "emergency".
